BREAK/ROOM Conversations June 2020

In partnership with Sozo Creative, APAP is excited to bring you APAP BREAK/ROOM Conversations, June 10-11, 2020. APAP BREAK/ROOM Conversations is a unique series of virtual dialogues with leaders across our field---artists, presenters, producers, agents, managers, funders and other cultural workers---launched in response to the current crisis.

Crisis often brings clarity and opportunity for innovation, but asking the right questions is part of that process and can forever change how we see ourselves, our world, our relationship and our future.

We may leave with more questions, but that’s part of the ongoing navigation of the unknown. Industry voices engage in discussions to provide insight and thinking about the current crisis, stabilization, recovery and transformation.

Join us as we launch this new series to reimagine the post-COVID-19 future for the arts. APAP is grateful to The Wallace Foundation for their support of our work to provide information, resources and programs to help the field navigate the COVID-19 crisis.

Resources

When we began planning APAP BREAK/ROOM Conversations, it was in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, its deep impacts on our field and the industry pain points it revealed. The crisis brings with it clarity and opportunity to innovate and re-imagine the performing arts industry and our relationship to the social fabric of our communities and with each other. BREAK/ROOM offers a chance for us to pause, pivot and consider ways we might rebuild and redesign our field.

The crisis ignited by the unjust murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor and so many others has only sharpened our focus and ignited the urgency of activating our field and our work through the lens of race, equity, diversity and inclusion (REDI). How are our actions, policies, commitments, programming and investments aligned with our forward facing values? This crisis also affirms that innovations in the field are needed and that the cultural leaders have the mandate for paving the way to a more just and equitable world.

We look forward to your joining us and invite you to dive into these valuable anti-racism resources that will help ground our conversations as we reimagine the post-COVID-19 future of the arts.

The current global health crisis revealed an already broken system in which artists, programmers and other cultural workers were working. As we take a collective breath to pause, grieve, rest and reset, we need to name what wasn’t working, accept those failures and talk about how crisis can also lead to systemic change.
