2020 started with a pandemic. Then came the murder of George Floyd followed by the world’s outcry and protests, fueling demands for social justice and a racial reckoning decades in the making---not just across the country, but across our performing arts field.

It is through this lens and all that it involves – realizing the economic decimation of our field, the emotional toll of loss, centering BIPOC voices, dismantling and rebuilding systems, and holding our field and each other accountable – that APAP|NYC+ is conceived, so that we all show up equitably at the table. Racial equity, anti-racist practice and social justice are no longer relegated to the back or to a track because these issues are central to APAP’s priorities and key to our field’s survival.

So, at APAP|NYC+ we will be infusing these issues and themes in all that you experience, because this is what this moment is about. It will take all of us in conversation and deep listening.  It will take all of us advocating for each other. And it will take all of us to rebuild on a foundation that is truly just, safe, equitable, and advances and supports all of us.

In the spirit of the many conversations we have had to-date---from those jam-packed with resources and information to those that provoke and engage---we will all come together at APAP|NYC+. In curated and interactive sessions on a range of subjects, artists, presenters, agents, managers, producers, funders – all arts workers will respond, re-imagine and build back better.

APAP|NYC+ Programming

APAP|NYC+ programming will include activities attendees know and love while introducing new elements in response to the new normal and our online convening.

  • Plenaries that focus our attention on critical issues, the state of our field, the state of the world, the state of our mental health, and the state of our future.

  • Professional development sessions that provide you with practical strategies and resources for navigating the now while building for the future, and innovations from colleagues across the globe to inspire and sustain you and your work through these unprecedented times.

  • Critical, interactive field-wide discussions that require all of us (artists, agents, managers, producers, presenters) to come together to share and advocate for new models of partnership and access, question our past, challenge our present, push through discomfort and hold ourselves and each other accountable to forge an equitable path to a new normal. Our field and our survival depend on it.

  • Affinity Groups, Networking Sessions, Roundtable Discussions, Safe Spaces to share challenges with YOUR people, greet missed colleagues, meet new colleagues, get the support you need, be heard, swap ideas, and engage in more intimate conversations about topics you care about. Good for introverts, too.

  • Breaks, Rest, and Moments to Recharge

  • NEW! Pitch Sessions where exhibiting agents, managers, artists and other field partners can give 10-minute pitches during designated times during the conference.

  • Social celebrations and gatherings, so you can join fellow attendees in themed happy hours, receptions, signature cocktail making, and the downtime you need just to connect.

  • Recorded replays of sessions that allow you to view the sessions and events you want, when you want.

APAP|NYC+ Topic Areas

APAP|NYC+ programming will deliver critical information and host urgent conversations on topics, including:

  • State-of-the-Field/State-of-the-Art Updates: Learn the latest with up-to-the-minute briefings on public health and re-opening, visa policy, immigration, international touring, safety protocols, BIPOC artists and leaders, audience research findings and funding forecasts.

  • Survival Strategies and Roadmaps for the Future: Whether it's cultivating and stewarding donors, eyeing new approaches to livestreaming your work, decentering whiteness in your organization, tapping into support for BIPOC artists, scenario planning for uncertain times, contracting in the Age of COVID or models in crisis leadership, we will offer actionable information on how to pivot.

  • Resilience and Mental Health: Get the tools, support and resources you need to get through these unprecedented and challenging times.

  • Field Innovation and Inspiration: Learn how peers and colleagues are experimenting and succeeding with new livestream innovations, hyperlocal programming, micro-commissioning, authentic and sustainable programming with and for BIPOC artists, artist/presenter partnerships and developing effective regional and local advocacy for their organizations.

  • Calls for Radical Change and a New Normal in the Field: The global pandemic has forever changed our world and revealed broken unsustainable systems in our performing arts field. To build back better we need radical change. Learn about new initiatives, resources and movements to address more equitable partnerships between artists, agents producers and presenters; anti-racist practices that help rebuild a new ecosystem; increasing BIPOC leadership in the C-suite, new touring models in the face of a climate crisis, advocacy strategies post-election and more.

APAP|NYC+ Affinity Groups

Affinity Groups at APAP|NYC+ provide opportunities for you to "meet your people" to discuss and address issues of common concern. 

While usually a members-only benefit, during APAP|NYC+, APAP Affinity Groups are free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required for non-members and those not registered for APAP|NYC+. Conference registrants do not have to RSVP to attend Affinity Groups. Simply add them to your agenda in the Conference Platform and show up!
