APAP National Call-in on Performing Arts Presenting and Education
The role of performing arts presenters and artists in the education of young people and adults has changed with the "new realities" that affect arts, education and community engagement nationally. Arts Presenters' recent survey of members confirmed that presenters are broadening their education mission and goals to respond to 1) the loss of arts education in the schools; 2) the need to improve the quality and quantity of artists equipped to provide learning experiences for both children and adults; and, 3) expanded and unique education-related programs that will develop and engage diverse and intergenerational life-long participation in the arts.
The June 22, 2010, national call-in provided an opportunity for an exchange of information, ideas and strategies that focus on how presenters can best improve and expand educational programs and services related to such areas as partnerships, technology, professional development, funding, quality and impact. The discussion was guided by a team of panelists with broad knowledge and experience in the arts and education, and included:
- Brian Bethune, Dean of Performing Arts, Cuyahoga Community College (Cleveland, OH)
- Arnie Malina, Artistic Director and Chief Programming Officer, Flynn Center for the Performing Arts (Burlington, VT)
- Jeanette Spencer McCune, Assistant Director of Teacher and School Programs, Community Partnerships, The Kennedy Center (Washington, DC)
- Malik Robinson, Senior Director, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance (Denver, CO)
- Mimi Flaherty Willis, Senior Director, Education, Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts (Vienna, VA)
- Mister Mojo, Artist, MOJO & The Bayou Gypsies (Chicago, IL)
